TGR’s iPhone 3.0 Rumor List: Constantly updated

There’s now just over a day until Apple showcases its iPhone 3.0 software, so here’s our constantly updated rumor list, compiled from various sources around the internet.

Bluetooth/USB Tethering: Boy Genius Report suggests there’ll be official support for data tethering in iPhone 3.0 via Bluetooth or USB.

MMS: BGR also predicts the iPhone will finally get Multimedia Messaging as part of its latest major software revision.

Cut, Copy and Paste: Kevin Rose of Diggnation heard from his sources that the iPhone will get the long-requested feature of Copy and Paste in the latest software. He describes the implementation of such a feature on the above video link.

Palm Pre features: Rose also claims to have heard that iPhone 3.0 will equal all features of the Palm Pre, based on their Web OS software. That means Adobe Flash support everyone.

Premium App Store: While related mostly to iTunes, Pocketgamer says that Apple will open a new ‘premium’ $20+ App Store area, to help separate premium content applications from their cheaper counterparts.

Interestingly, Kevin Rose mentioned that both Video recording and Background applications would not be supported in 3.0. This seems to be all we have found so far regarding features for 3.0. Let us know if you’ve seen anything else in the comments. Remember that The Green Room will be liveblogging the whole event, for more details click here. – r.

Rant of the Week: iPhone Software Updates

tgr-iphone-update-download-rant

Don’t get me wrong – when Apple announces software updates that are actually useful (like the incredible new 2.2.1 update), I get excited. What annoys me about these updates is the file size. The last five updates (2.0.1, 2.0.2, 2.1, 2.2, 2.2.1) were all 200MB+. The “less exciting releases” (those that go into three decimals) often only include minor bug fixes, like Safari stability or improved Mobile Me sync. With my ADSL connection, these downloads take up to three hours. The size of the update really baffles me, and I hope Apple will look at this flaw for future software. – r.

Apple gives iPod nano owners $25 scratch refund

1g-ipod-nano

Owners of 1st generation iPod nanos can now send in their serial numbers for a $15-$25 refund, after CNBC reports that Apple is settling a class-action lawsuit that begun in late 2005. Customers who received a slip case with their iPod nano get (USD) $15, while those who didn’t get $25. Apple has put aside $22 million to those who apply to the refund program.

If your iPod nano doesn’t have an aluminum enclosure, there’s a good chance you can apply. This site has full details and links to the claim form. – r.

The above photo seen on the New York Times site shows Paul Pelosi playing with his iPhone while Barack Obama takes the Presidential oath on Inauguration day. Gizmodo’s caption was great, but we want to see what you can come up with. Leave a response in the comments section or email us. We’ll showcase the best in a subsequent post. – r.

The Phantom Lapboard is (almost) here

img_0735

A few of our readers may remember the Phantom, one of the first consoles to use a downloadable gaming content delivery system. Despite all of the hype surrounding a new way of playing games at home (when introduced in 2001), the product was never launched. This article has a detailed summary of their problems.

The company behind the console (also called Phantom) is, however, still alive and recently, they’ve been plugging the Lapboard, an ergonomic keyboard designed to be used mostly for gaming comfortably at home. After “pulling a Phantom console” (that is, promising a product to be launched ages before it is actually released) the final model is almost ready, and a review unit has been sent to Gizmodo.

They give it a pretty decent review. It features PS3 and Mac compatibility, an extremely adjustable keyboard base and a reasonably nice looking mouse to accompany it. Based on the photos I’ve seen, I wouldn’t say it’s worth $130 (USD) and just about an eternity of waiting.

According to Giz, Phantom plans to sell the Lapboard from their website in February. There’s some more information at the CEO’s blog. – r.

Singapore Airlines offers iPod connectivity on medium haul flights

singapore-ipod-business

Singapore Airlines today unveiled their latest addition to their Economy Class in-flight entertainment system: iPod and iPhone connectivity. The new system allows you to charge your iPod or iPhone while watching or listening to your content on the, er, bigger screen.

Singapore is one of the better airlines when it comes to technology and in-flight entertainment. It’s disappointing that other airlines are less than willing to embrace this smart idea. Australians are stuck with the technologically challenged Qantas, who still believe a time delayed, limited content “portal” serves as a better alternative to in-flight Wi-Fi.

Singapore is rolling out the service on their A330 aircraft this year, after a successful Business Class trial was conducted on A340 aircraft in late 2008.

While there are some questions about why Apple would release a thin, lite and large MacBook Air, who knows. - c.

Apple: 15 thousand apps available, 500 million downloads on iPhone and iPod touch

tgr-apple-15000-ad

This evening Apple announced (through a banner placed on their home page) that it’s App Store for the iPhone and iPod touch had reached more than 15,000 apps, and 500 million downloads have taken place since the time the store opened in July 2008.

This milestone is particularly notable as it represents an incredible increase in developer interest within the past month. The 10,000 apps mark was reached on December 6th, almost six months after it opened. Now, just 42 days after that announcement, the number of available apps has increased by 50%. At this rate, you can expect to see 20,000+ apps available by the end of February. – r.
