WWDC 2009: 3rd generation iPhone graphical rumor round-up

Picture 3

TGR WWDC 2009 iPhone graphic rumor round-up

Here’s a graphical representation I put together of the dozens of rumors that have been circulating over the past few months regarding the third generation iPhone that’s likely to be announced next week at WWDC 2009 (our keynote liveblog details can be found here). Click the image for a higher resolution version. There’s a few notes for this one:
* I’ve put some source numbers beside each arrow, these are the references for each rumor and are published at the bottom of this post.
* The rumors (such as release date and price) that don’t really match a particular part of the iPhone’s hardware/software have been placed at a random point on the back of the iPhone.
* The prediction key is based entirely on my own opinion, and is by no means accurate.
Of course, if anything else develops between now and Phil’s keynote, I’ll be listing them here, so be sure to check back before the day, and remember, we’ll be covering the keynote live right here on TGR, click here for the details. – r.

Update: It seems this has generated quite some interest around the internet with more than 10,000 people visiting per day – thanks for your views, tweets and pings!

Update 2: The great folks over at iPodizados.com have translated the graphic into Spanish. Check it out here!

Wallpaper Weekend: iPhone Spark

iPhone sparks

Here’s the first (and last) iPhone 3G wallpaper I’m making before Phil Schiller and the team (are likely to) unveil a new iPhone at WWDC this year (our live keynote coverage is here). Either way, I’ll make sure I create an updated version with the third generation iPhone when it arrives, and until then, download and enjoy this one! Apple: 15 thousand apps available, 500 million downloads on iPhone and iPod touch

tgr-apple-15000-ad

This evening Apple announced (through a banner placed on their home page) that it’s App Store for the iPhone and iPod touch had reached more than 15,000 apps, and 500 million downloads have taken place since the time the store opened in July 2008.

This milestone is particularly notable as it represents an incredible increase in developer interest within the past month. The 10,000 apps mark was reached on December 6th, almost six months after it opened. Now, just 42 days after that announcement, the number of available apps has increased by 50%. At this rate, you can expect to see 20,000+ apps available by the end of February. – r.

Pink iPhone to debut at Macworld 2009?

Please note: This article has been classified as a rumor. Information presented may be inaccurate.

b7f8_1

A mysterious pink iPhone was spied on eBay this evening, accompanied by several photos and detailed tech specs. It is believed that the photos are legitimate. Obviously, this information leads to the theory that Phil will be unveiling multi-colored iPhones at Macworld on Wednesday. According to the product description on eBay:

You are bidding on what i think is the only pink Iphone on the market. This is not a case or cover it is the actual body of the Iphone. Iphone comes boxed with all accessories and has latest 2.2 firmware installed. The phone is locked to O2 but could easily be unblocked if required. This is the ultimate pink accessory for anyone, this phone is guaranteed to turn heads wherever you go and as far as i am aware is unavailable anywhere else. This is perfect to give as a gift or just to treat yourself! please note the sim card tray is black (as illustrated in picture) Please be aware i will only send to UK bidders. please email first if you have zero feedback. Happy Bidding!

While this is the first rumor to show up about a pink iPhone 3G, the evidence does seem genuine and I wouldn’t be surprised if more shows up before MWSF about new iPhone colors. – r.

Optus announces new Prepaid iPhone pricing

picture-11

Today Optus released new prepaid pricing for the iPhone 3G, and resumed sale of the handset nationwide. Optus mysteriously stopped selling the [prepaid] iPhone a few months after its initial release, making them only available at the company’s Sydney CBD store. Recently Optus increased the price of their Post-Paid plans, so prepaid price hikes were expected by the end of the year.

Under Optus’ new pricing structure, purchasing a prepaid 8GB iPhone locked to the Optus network costs $799 (up from $729). 16GB iPhones are now $899 (up from $849). Unlocking the handset for use with any network now costs $120 (or $120 worth of Optus turbo recharge).

Optus’ price hikes do not effect existing prepaid customers, so if you have purchased a iPhone before today’s announcements, you can still legitimately unlock the device for $80 (or $80 worth of Optus turbo recharge).

Despite today’s news, there’s still no word as to Apple selling prepaid iPhones in their Retail Stores. – r.
